ICS have been featured in Beauty Packaging Magazine’s January/February 2021 Issue on Lip Color & Mascara Packaging!

During this COVID-19 era, consumers are looking more for products that make them feel better and are incorporating more wellness and skincare focused products into their daily routines.  As a result, lip balms, lip scrubs and lip masks are growing in popularity.

This increased focus in selfcare has impacted cosmetics, with color cosmetic formulations adopting a skincare approach. For example, adding active moisturizing ingredients or other caring actives into lipsticks and lip glosses. This hybrid of color cosmetic and wellness formulations is also reflected in lip packaging. At ICS we are seeing more lip formulations in classically skincare packaging, such as tubes, jars and rollerball packs. With many beauty salons not working their usual hours, consumers have had to invest more time into their own brows. Tinted brow gel is an easy and effective way to keep your brows neatly shaped for that laminated, defined, full brow effect. At ICS we have seen an increased demand for brow wand packaging, as well as more traditional brow packaging, such as single or duo-end brow pencils with extra fine tips for hair-like strokes.

Despite the need to wear a mask, glossy lip formulations are still a key lip trend. This current stay-at-home lifestyle has created a more casual, laid-back apparel which is reflected in consumers lip product choices. The need to feel comfortable and effortless makes packaging with chubby doefoots an ideal choice. Their thick, chubby applicator applies a generous amount of bulk in just one swipe, providing the consumer with a satisfying, full-coverage application experience. Stick packaging for lips, such as lipbalms also provides the same effortless swipe-on application option. At ICS we have many liquid lip packs with chubby doefoots available, as well as many lipstick and lipbalm options, in various sizes, shapes and materials. Our newest innovation in stick packaging are our PET mono-material lipsticks. The cap, base and inner mechanisms are all 100% recyclable PET material. Once the formulation is all used up, simply pop the whole pack into the recycling bin.

Many lipstick formulations require specific godet fitments, so it is important that the packaging and formulation developers collaborate. At ICS our packaging and formulation teams have technical expertise in lipstick packaging. Depending on whether the lipstick formulation is firmer or more creamy will result in specific godet requirements and our experts will work closely together to ensure your packaging is fit for the formulation. At ICS we have a variety of lip packaging available, in various sustainable materials, such as recyclable plastic, PCR plastic, glass and paper. One of our newest sustainable breakthroughs in lip formulation packaging is our 100% recyclable FSC paper push-up stick, without any plastic mechanism inside. Simply use your finger to gradually push up the paper base up until your desired amount of product is showing. Once your formulation is all used up you can recycle or compost your whole pack! Other sustainable innovation in lip packaging at ICS are our Refillable PCR Lipsticks. Aesthetically pleasing and functionally effortless to use, they can also utilize post-consumer recycled plastic. Simply pull the lipstick godet from out of the base, then easily insert the refill into the base until it securely clicks in place. At ICS we have a variety of refillable packaging available, ranging from jars to pencils, to compacts and sticks.

Recently, eyes and lashes have also been a key focal point of the face due to face masks. As a result, mascaras with volumizing effects have been the target of consumers choices. Video calls and meetings have also heightened this lash trend as many people want to look awake and energized for their video conferences. At ICS we have seen increased demand for mascara packaging with volumizing and lengthening brushes, such as mixed fiber brushes. In mixed fiber brushes, the smooth, soft fibers are generously charged with bulk, which during use is gently released on to lashes for volumous coverage. The stiff fibers then work to comb and separate the lashes, providing a long, dramatic lash look. At ICS we work with our clients to navigate through the technical maze of pairing or designing the right stem, wiper and brush combination for the formula to help create the ideal mascara.

Recent trends in packaging decoration has been a ‘less is more’ approach, with an increased emphasis on sustainability and packaging shapes and less on second process finishes. At ICS we have seen an increased demand for custom in-mold designs for both mascara and lip packaging. Embossing or debossing of logos and graphics has become a popular decoration choice as it removes the need for a second process, creating a more eco-friendly design.
